before the war Lebanon had just kicked out the Syrians and elected a pro-Western government. First step to being able to do just that.

But now said government looks crap and is forced to praise Hezbollah for trying to protect Lebanese soil from Israeli aggression. Which is what Hezbollah (whose popularity in Lebanon has risen) hoped would happen. They needed the Israelis to do the stupid thing, but of course in the crazy world of the Middle East you can always rely on your fellow extremists to do just what you want. Both sides' extremists rely on the other to keep the conflict going, because in conflict extremists always thrive (this is George Bush's strategy too).
