Is he better or has he got better players around him?

He cant tackle

He cant beat a player

Hes not excatly mobile

He can player a great pass, but to often he looks for the killer ball to early and it doesnt come off.

If Man U are looking for a replacement for Keane then Carrick is hardly that, they will still need a grafter in centre mid alongside him. Gattuso or Hargreaves would have been perfect.
