nah sounds like a low voltage downlighter with a 50w lamp

perfectly fine to dim as long as its used with the right type of transformer install loads of them these days.

i've installed hundreds of dimmer switches and any heat problem is almost always because the module is not capable of dealing with the power requirments. I would suggest that you get your electrician to ensure that it is man enough to deal with the downlighters the only other reason would be because there is a loose/broken cable(unlikely) or you have a cheap as s**t switch.
