there are 2 sizes of dimmers usually used in houses

250w and 400w the one you put in is depentant of the amount of power being used on the switching circuit e.g how many and what wattage rating the light bulbs are. chances are he has installed a 250 when you need a 400. Get him to change it before it burns the coil out, it will only involve changing the module not the whole switch. not dangerous really but will burn the switch out.
