So where DID all the money go?

Last summer we received ?2 million for Damo, then a parachute payment of ?6 million, yet by January of this year we didn't even have the ?50,000 to pay for Robinson.
We must have cleared around ?2.5 million on the Ashton / Earnie deals, yet we were outbid by Derby for Howard.

The only explanation I can see for it is that the club must run at a massive operating loss - which seems odd given that we are constantly told how small the squad is.
