Bascially....

There are two tyre manufacturers in the sport, Michelin and Bridgestone...There was an accident the other day and they found that drivers who were using Michelin tyres (all but 6 of them) were in danger because the tyres could not take the speed at which they would have been driven into the last corner of the lap. So in the interest of safety the drivers using Michelin tyres asked that a chicane was put in before the last corner to slow the cars down to avoid the danger. The sports governing body refused to do this and so all the Michelin drivers withdrew from the race, leaving just 6 cars on the grid at the start of the race.
