Hey, lots of "if's" and "but's" here, but, as I understand it, and not just from this board, but other people...
Yes, he did ask about coming back, he was offering pay as you play, and the package involved was within our existing pay structure. I would imagine the guy is wealthy and settled and wanted to settle down back in his home area, play cricket and golf, see his family grow up, and think about his long term future over a year, year and a half whilst playing for us-even when he left, he said he wanted to finish his career at Norwich...
I think he would have offered a lot-not just in attack but at the back. However, I reckon the thought of a returning hero made Worthington shiver, just as he would never had wanted Eadie back HAD he been fit enough, just as he was glad to see off Malky and Iwan for those same reasons, ditto Svensson, who was fast becoming a club and fan hero; he would have vetoed any efforts from Sutton, no matter how realistic the terms.
Hell, he might even had said he'd sign on for three months, same terms, what would we have lost then-not an awful lot, even if it hadn't worked out, but we might have had a lot to gain. He's not completely knackered-Celtic and Strachan desperately wanted him tostay, they were willing to sell Hartson to keep Sutton, so thgey wouldn't have held onto him had they thought he was near finished.
We'll never know but if NW has rejected or put down any such move, then thats just systematic of the man and his approach of wanting to be king pin, unmovable, and at the centre of everything with no outside threats or influences. How long before Gunny finds a similar job at another club I wonder?
