Christiania is the place in Copenhagen. Short history: old army barracks that had been disused for years until a load of hippies squatted it in the early 70s. Somehow they managed to obtain a semi-autonomous status within Denmark after a few years. Soft drugs were openly sold despite being technically illegal and the police & government let them get on with it. Until the last few years when it's become prime building land because it's so close to the city centre. A couple of years ago the police raided it and closed down "pusher street". It's now rapidly becoming a s**thole because the drugs have gone underground and are now being sold by sinister looking thugs in hooded tops and the only customers seem to be stoned/pissed Finns.
