the thing about Francis's poor form in the latter part of the Prem season was that once we switched to the Hucks+Bentley+2 strikers formation Francis had to concentrate almost exclusively on defensive duties (SOMEONE had to), but that wasn't the strong point of his game. He had looked really good in the earlier part of the season because of his forward running and goalscoring. If you put him in a position where he can't do what he is best at of course he is suddenly going to look poor.
