Italy v France comparison

Buffon, as one of the top two goalkeepers of all time is well ahed of Barthez, who, always has an error in him.

Zambrotta has been the outstanding full back of the competition, so impressive defensively and going forward. Sagnol has also looked top notch, but not quite as strong defensively.

Abidal has looked the weak link in the French defence, was asleep against Portugal at times. Grosso has looked a bit suspect defensively at times but has been superb going forward.

Cannavaro has been the world cup's best player by some way. Immaculate. Thuram has looked solid, not the player he was, but still a top performer.

Gallas has been superb. Really proved himself to be the key behind Chelsea's defence. MAterazzi suprisingly solid without ever totally convincing.

Makelele has been quiet but effective. Gattuso ahs been simply outstanding - a true underrated monolith.

Vieira after a poor season has looked back to his best, particularly offensively. Pirlo, however, has been different gravy - technique and grace of an eagle.

Zidane, one outstanding performance, seems to lift the whole team with his presence and ability to dictate the play. Perrota, incontrast is a real unsung hero - work rate of a Hyena combined with no little skill.

Malouda has been poor for the most part, some promise but little delivery. Camoranesi has shown glimpses of talent, but likewise has not really shone through.

Totti has emerged in the latter games as a real force - demonstrating his peerless club form. Ribery has been a revelation - pace and directness that always scares defences.

Toni has worked hard and is vital for the balance of the team. Henry having a very good world cup in spite of his often questionable antics.

Subs - Italy win hands down.

Italy win should occur so long as Cannavaro can maintain his form and see off Henry. Buffon's immense talent at shot stopping and, more importantly, organisation, should negate the French strength at set pieces.

Expect a close one with the Azzurri just edging it by the odd goal or two.
