what i didn't know about is the staggering cost of putting people on death row. since 1978 (when california reinstated the death sentence) 13 people have been executed at a cost of an estimated $4.5 billion spent on its death penalty system since 1978, yet has carried out only 13 executions during that period. this works out at around £257.3 million per a single execution
why so expensive?
death penalty trials are considerably more complicated.
defendants require extensive legal representation and appeals.
cases can remain in the courts for decades.
special prison arrangements and execution procedures create additional costs.
california hasn't executed anyone since 2006, despite having hundreds of people on death row.
obv this won't be welcome news to relatives and loved one's that are linked with some absolutely dreadful crimes .
state governer newsom argues that maintaining such an expensive system, which rarely results in executions, makes little sense.
