when the supercontinent known as Pangea fragmented, leaving Laurasia, the tectonics underlying this continent continued to drift apart and convergence resulting in the further breakup of the large mass. Past of this resulted in the break of Africa from Europe - parting at what is now known as the Mediterranean Sea. The break up of the continents occured in such a way that modern day Italy is shaped, to a very rough extent, akin to a boot.
