a modest proposal for destabilising the traitors...

i've been musing about the traitors and wondering whether, rather than simply playing the game and being led by the nose, one could manipulate the psychological machinery on which it depends.

my strategy would be to introduce a little bit of psychological chaos into the proceedings. during the opening ceremony, when winkelman is clopping her way around the round table selecting the traitors by pinching them on the shoulder while everyone is blindfolded and gripped by paranoia and self doubt, i'd wait until she'd passed my chair and her footsteps had receded before surreptitiously reaching over and pinching my neighbour on the shoulder. then i'd sit there looking as innocent as a man waiting for a bus, and let the psychological carnage unfold. divide and conquer.

if they hadn't been selected, they might believe themselves to be a traitor and start behaving accordingly, perhaps even attempting to identify their fellow conspirators.

if they had already been selected, the second pinch might leave them wondering whether it was a mistake, a secret signal or some sort of additional instruction. either way, i'd have introduced an entirely meaningless event into a game in which every gesture is scrutinised for hidden significance.

the beauty of the idea is that i wouldn't need to tell a single lie or construct an elaborate conspiracy. i'd simply introduce a tiny anomaly and allow everyone else to invent explanations for it. my neighbour might start acting suspiciously, other contestants might notice, and before long an innocent little pinch could generate a whole web of false suspicions and imaginary alliances.

in a game built on paranoia, the most effective way to manipulate proceedings might be to make people question not just one another, but their own understanding of what's happening.

i'm not suggesting it would win me the prize money, and the production team might take a dim view of my extracurricular activities if they noticed, but as an exercise in gratuitous mischief, it strikes me as rather promising and leaves me some delicious wiggle room for some machievellen shenanigans.

after all, why merely play the traitors when you can attempt to destabilise the entire psychological ecosystem with one tiny, surreptitious pinch? it might not make me a winner, but it could make for some rather good telly.
