I was on the first plane allowed to land at Newark after 9/11

from Heathrow and couldn't believe that we flew over ground zero with the smoke still rising and the red harris type fencing wrapped round the adjacent buildings making it look like hell. Seemed wrong at the time. With no words said at the airport I stood looking over at the scene and an armed security guard (female, nothing funny to see here) came over and we hugged and blubbed a bit but said nothing. Poignant moment I'll never forget.
