I I don’t really attribute most of the blame to him.

He’s in a reasonable position and is well within his rights to expect his linesman to be competent enough to spot an obvious, completely unimpeded handball from 20 yards away.

Something I’ve been thinking about, though, is the referee’s reluctance to take control and just make a decision himself. In the Premier League, I guess they’ve become so accustomed to VAR bailing them out that they’re less inclined to trust their own judgement in the moment.
