I think most of us understood the story

And his skin colour was utterly irrelevant to him being exposed.
He lied and lied again, a once respected institution failed him, themselves are probably more importantly the students he was utterly unqualified to tutor.
The scale of the deception and the scale of the institutional failings are what made this story so big.
