Last part reasonably enlightening:

CS: Sorry to jump in there, but just explain, because I can hear people saying, ‘But they sold Josh Sargent for X amount.’ Just explain why that might not necessarily be the case. Give us a very brief overview of why that is, because that’s going to be the response people have to that point about finances.

PD: They spent £8 million on Andre Brooks. They certainly didn’t start this window with what was Sargent, £17 million, let’s say, burning a hole in their pocket.

Go back to this time last summer, just before Nunez’s departure. I think they were in an £8-9 million deficit in terms of their transfer outlay versus what they brought in. They obviously brought in money for Nunez, but then look at what they did in January, and look at the players they signed. At the start of this window, they’ve done a permanent deal for Sam Field.

I’m not sat here in a Kieran Maguire-style way trying to defend Norwich and their financial strategy. But the reality is, quite simply, there is no Josh Sargent-sized hole sitting in a coffer at Carrow Road that they can open the vault and take money out of.

If there was, they would have spent it by now; I can guarantee you that, because of the ambition Philippe Clement clearly has for this club, this group of players, himself and his coaching staff. If the funds were there, they would have spent them.

The funds aren’t there. And that will be underlined, I think, by where they go next, whether that’s the left-hand side of the attacking three or the left-hand side of defence.

There was talk about Harry Amass potentially being available in recent days for a fee in the region of £6 million. Norwich do not have £6 million to pay for Harry Amass, or any other player, for that matter. That is the reality.

Underpinning all of that are the new cost rules that are in place this summer for the first time in the Championship. Squad cost ratio rules mean Norwich’s spending power is linked to what they generate, alongside some owner equity. That doesn’t give them the ability to go and spend millions and millions of pounds from here.

The reality is they don’t have millions and millions to spend. As a fan, you don’t want to hear that, but we speak to enough people involved in driving these processes inside the club.

We had very good access last week when we were at their training base in London, and the messaging could not have been clearer: they do not have tens of millions, or £6m, £7m or £8m, to spend on players. That’s the reality.

We can debate it all we want, but I would be surprised if the remaining business, singular or plural, amounts to a huge amount. There is a necessity now, perhaps, to do something, but they’re going to have to be very creative.
