I don't think he was ahead of the defender, they were level

and Spence then thrust his leg in front of the defender to initiate contact, or if he was ahead, not by enough to be able to legitimately move in front of him to shield the ball.

I would agree with you if he actually were ahead of the defender and had moved across to shield the ball, but I don't think he was ahead.
