FWIW, I agree. You'd have to fit a model that accounted for the quality of the team, to control for how often they are in they are in the box. Touches in the opponent's box or something might work. Then you could better infer whether there still seemed to be anything statistically unlikely, and hence fishy.
But you know....I was just trying to be helpful to another wrather on how stats work, not submit a thesis.
