how they built them 170 years or so ago is fascinating

basically they would build a ring of a few courses of bricks at the top and then carefully excavate soil from inside the ring. they knew what they were doing and nibbled away just enough for the weight of the bricks to fall down by gravity and just kept repeating that the additional weight of the bricks on top speeding up the process until they reached the aquifier level. so they just sunk the whole construction down like pushing a massive tube of bricks down.

they then rendered the bricks with lime mortar and you know what, not one single sprig of weed or plant matter has made it through the entire wall of that well. all dug out by hand and hand-balled to the top in buckets. amazing.
