one thing i miss about the world cups of the '70s, '80s and '90s is their simplicity. back then, there was very little build-up, you'd tune in shortly before kick-off, get a brief introduction, and then the football took centre stage.
now it's just hours of previews, montages, endless opinions from panels of pundits, celebrity cutaways, multiple co-commentators and analysis of every tiny detail.
for me, all of that has diluted the experience. more choice hasn't necessarily made it better; it's taken away some of the purity and anticipation that made the world cup feel so special.
