I think you've misunderstood me

My problem with us wasn't the early rounds in themselves. You can clearly argue that like the French (and Italians?) you only need to do enough there to get through and (unlike Spain or Argentina) save your best performances for the later rounds.
My problem is that, since we wewren't able to raise our game in the later stages, our performances in those early games was not just "doing enough to get through" (like France) but actually was the best we could do (after all, how often did we really look any different in the qualifiers)
