Suspect the truth is somewhere in between.

He did sound genuinely emotional and he’s had quite a ride over the last 5 years. I don’t think it’s entirely cynical, but taking 6 months out will certainly not harm his reputation or his next pay packet. And it screws over the Binners. What’s not to like.
