Parties are keen to focus on others instead.
It is clearly now vital that pension benefits as a whole are means tested.
To get there though would need to be a structural change, over many years, including a vast amount of stakeholders.
People heading to pension age would need periods of time to adjust their planning accordingly, among many many other things.
Its a complex question, that would need to be put to all of us, through a long term consultation project, involving in-depth, open and honest discussions of factual information on complex topics.
That would never be allowed to happen. It would be hijacked from all sides for political points meaning any change that was agreed would be at best watered down so much to be pointless, or at worst a disastrous short term path dressed up as a 'win' leaving a timebomb for someone else to fix.
As a nation our attention span and ability to discuss/debate honestly simply isn't up to it anymore.
