why is this newsworthy?
well, around 30% of the Gripen is reported to involve UK intellectual property/components, with several key systems supplied or manufactured by UK-based firms.
The UK Government says the Gripen deal will involve at least 50 British-based companies and will support over 5,000 UK jobs. It also says critical components, including radar and landing gear, are supplied by UK companies.

Saab’s own UK page gives a similar but slightly broader figure: it says Gripen has created 4,000 to 5,700 highly skilled jobs across the UK over 10 years, citing a 2015 Deloitte study.
