people from all backgrounds can commit terrible crimes. But what angers many people — rightly or wrongly — is the perception that for years, especially in parts of the North of England, vulnerable girls were failed. Serious abuse was allowed to continue because authorities were too afraid of being labelled racist. That failure by police, social services, and local councils meant young girls were not protected. Wrong is wrong, regardless of anyone’s background, and we should all feel some level of shame that these institutions didn’t act sooner.”
