seriously thhough, the UK has a huge asylum seeker problem and is failing to address it positively.
the hotel accommodation solution is just politically toxic, hughly expensive and added fuel to the fire.
the small boat crossings are benefitting organised crime at the expense of those seeking asylum/looking to benefit from the UK as a soft touch (either/or).
the system is too slow, too expensive (hotels) and not effective at removing people after refusal.
our country is not right whatever side of the political spectrum you inhabit and nobody in power, or wanting power, seems to be willing to fix it other than just wanting to exploit it to gain or retain power.
we absolutely should welcome genuine asylum seekers and help them.
the UK is legally required (under conventions like the United Nations Refugee Convention) to assess asylum claims and provide basic support while people wait.
in real terms the financial support to asylum seekers is modest; what should be basic accommodation (hotels is way ott imo) and they recieve about £40-£50 a week for essentials.
the roll up in costs are because the system is too slow and inefficient so the costs spiral into billions. we just aren't dealing with it well.
the system is highly inneficient at removing refused asylum seekers so they just continue to drain the system.
at our expense.
and we and our european neighbours are crap at dealing with the organised smuggling gangs so they continue to flourish.
it's a complicated issue but not an unsolvable one.
going at it by villifying one group against another and yapping about rape/not rape is not a good solution.
