Which because of institutional mistrust of the police (see eg abject failure to investigate grooming gangs for fear of being accused of racism) is misinterpreted as “they may be immigrants because the police haven’t said anything”.

It was obvious to anyone with thinking capacity that the fact the police weren’t releasing descriptions was that they didn’t believe her. But lots of people don’t think like that
