The Shuttle, being attached to two solid rockeet boosters is akin to "...firing a bullet with a butterfly hanging onto it..."

Apparantly the Shuttle is easily the most dangerous piece of transport that has ever been made, and by some considerable distance. The actual Shuttle itself is built on a shoestring budget, the boosters are so volatile and prone to failure that, logically, its more likely to blow up than get safely into orbit & the whole thing is based on 70's technology, even now.

Nixon wanted it and they rushed the design, paying big time for it now and now desparately hoping for a replacement but nothing fortcoming so having to persever with it (NASA) to justify their existence and budget!
