Law 6 – The Other Match Officials
This is the key section.
It states that assistant referees must:
• Indicate when an offence has been committed out of the referee’s view
• Signal when the ball is out of play
• Advise the referee on fouls and misconduct
⸻
🚩 How they signal (as per the Laws)
The Laws specify that assistant referees:
• Use the flag to communicate
• Raise it to:
• get attention
• indicate offences
• show direction of restart
They are also instructed to:
• Keep eye contact with the referee
• Only signal when they are confident the referee hasn’t seen it or needs help
⸻
🎧 Additional guidance
While the Laws mention flag signals, more detailed mechanics (like how long to hold the flag) are covered in:
• FA guidance
• Referee training materials
• Professional Game Match Officials guidance
