Because they are told that’s the problem. There’s no intellectual curiosity.

And most people who see immigration as a more important issue than crime or the economy, when asked why they think it’s so important, will reply with arguments about crime and the economy.

Ah for the days when there were no illegal immigrants, and therefore no crime and everybody was financially comfortable.

In general I would respect concerns about things I’m not so massively concerned about, but the last few years I struggle with that around immigration because there is zero recognition of the far more directly impactful issues in the U.K. There’s a discussion to be had but it should be one of many many issues that are being drowned out by obsession with it. That also forces governments to spend far more time dealing with it than they should, meaning focus is deflected from work that would actually make a daily difference to people.
