To help run the club, is my guess

They all had different roles, brought different skills to the table, to use a cliche. I imagine his experience in politics and public life were quite useful to running the business of a fairly high profile sports club. (Presuming you can accept whichever party he was involved with previously is irrelevant to that role, that is.)
