I can understand him mistakenly thinking that he needed something to

throw himself into as part of a healing process, but after that clearly didn’t work then taking time out after us was what I was expecting.

But these things are difficult. Perhaps he didn’t recognise it and perhaps he thought going to what looked a fairly safe option in a team who were in the playoff positions would have protected his reputation.
