For future reference....there is plenty of free parking 10 - 20 mins from the ground

we parked in Charlton Village car park, which was free (but I wouldn't attempt it with anything more than a small car).

And most streets to the south of there are not permit controlled.

You are right that Dartford is also a good option though.
