Birmingham City referee appointment for Norwich City clash.

The EFL have confirmed that Anthony Backhouse will be the referee for Birmingham’s game against Norwich on Saturday afternoon. The match kicks-off at 3pm and Paul Hodskinson and Bhupinder Singh Gill are the assistant referees. Meanwhile, Ross Joyce is the fourth official and there is of course no VAR in the Football League.

Backhouse, who is from Cumbria, caused controversy earlier this season after officiating Charlton vs Blackburn Rovers. Rovers skipper Todd Cantwell appealed for a penalty against the Addicks at The Valley but to no avail and they ended up losing 3-0 down in London.

Their manager Valerien Ismael wasn’t happy with Backhouse’s reaction to Cantwell’s appeal for a spot-kick and said afterwards: "What's embarrassing is that our captain is allowed to speak to the referee and he has winked at him and laughed at him. This is unacceptable. He made a mistake, but at least treat our player properly and not laugh at our players.”
