To be clear, I don't agree with how the Royal Family are funded and that needs to be modernised and streamlined.
On the whole, especially under the former Queen and I believe will be the case under the future King, I think the monarchy acts on behalf of the country - both in terms of finance generated from tourism and through soft power politically.
It can be argued that an elected head of state would be more democratic, but ultimately it would still end up being someone from elite political circles or wealthy backgrounds who is most likely seeking the role for their own benefit. I think that opens the role to abuse (I appreciate the irony of posting that this morning...)
