My favourite memory of him was at the promotion winning match v Blackburn

when he was playing for them. At the end he stayed of the pitch after the rest of his team had gone off and seemed to be going around the younger players telling them to take it all in. It may have been the peak of their careers and would have been a shame if it passed them by.

As it happens, that was my last game as with heart problems I had decided not to risk being taken ill 200 miles from home and this had seemed like a good point to finish on.
