Wimpy originated in the United States in the 1930s, founded by Edward Gold, who created "Wimpy Grills" in Indiana around 1934, inspired by the hamburger-loving character J. Wellington Wimpy from the Popeye cartoons. The brand launched in the UK in 1954 as a specialized fast-food section within J. Lyons & Co. corner houses, becoming the UK's first major hamburger chain.
