Donald Trump’s paternal grandfather, Friedrich (Frederick) Trump, was a German immigrant born in Kallstadt, Bavaria, in 1869 who moved to the U.S. in 1885 at age 16 to escape poverty. He built a fortune in the U.S. and Canada before being expelled from Germany in 1905 for failing to complete mandatory military service and failing to register his departure.
