The general response in America to this will be telling I think.

He's crossed a line (another one) with this, but this line resonates across the political spectrum, there are vanishingly few people that would disrespect service personal, even if they disagreed with the decisions taken to send them in to combat.

If 'America' i.e. the Media, Senior Military, Senators etc are not strong in coming out to back NATO forces, and/or criticise his comments, it will reinforce the growing feeling that the US simply cannot be trusted.
