The Social Media Hoax
In January 2016, a blog created a satirical rumor on Twitter that the deceased philosopher George Santayana was a potential transfer target for Norwich City football club. The rumor, intended to highlight the gullibility of some "in the know" football tipsters and fans on social media, quickly gained traction.
Gullible fans and even some media outlets spread the rumor that Santayana, who died in 1952, was about to sign for the team. The hoax culminated with the official Norwich City Twitter account joining in on the joke, tweeting that they had ended their interest in the "fan-backed" transfer after the philosopher had failed a medical.
