We have been generally competitive though.

And those 3 bowlers didn't last the series, we lost one after the 1st test.

They did stick with Pope too long, but I can understand why they went in that direction, hindsight has proved it wrong, but its an easy decision to make from an armchair.
Not as easy when you have to also consider the dynamic of a squad of different people and personalities.
