Re your 40% tax thing. Well think yourselves bloody lucky is all I can say! Most countries in the EU have far higher income tax rates than you lot.
In Holland our base rate is 38% and that's not including health or dental insurance, and with a personal allowance equivalent to about 1500 quid a year.
I'm not rich, but I have been in the 50% bracket for years now. I don't mind, because you can see the results of public spending every day (well, it's getting a bit worse but for 8 years it was fantastic).
Think of the poor old Irish - their cost of living is more like the London level than Norwich, while their salary level is much more Norwich, but their basic rate of income tax is (or at least was) almost 50%!
