I don’t think anyone thought “blow them away”

But I really did think we’d be competitive. We had two properly fast bowlers, plus Atkinson who had a fantastic test record up to this point, plus Stokes’s golden arm. So the attack looked good (the wisdom being that you need real quicks in Australia). And the batting was full of players who can score big.

Meanwhile Cummins and Hazelwood were injured and their top order bang out of form. It looked like a real chance.

It’s been so disappointing!
