I’ve sort of come to the conclusion that

The reality is England are 4-5 players short of being a really competitive team against the very best. And the coach/captain are trying to come up with a way of playing that gives them a chance anyway by playing high risk high reward cricket. Because they know that if they play “proper” cricket they’ll lose very often. So I get it. I get where we are. You need to increase the variance to give yourself a chance of overcoming the difference in average capability.

The problem is, against a better side like this in home conditions, you can really end up looking like a bunch of Charlies. As the confidence dips as the tour goes on, this could really really get ugly.
