The only way I could see a manager coming in and surviving relegation is if Knapper comes out now and effectively says whoever we appoint is a long term appointment and acknowledges that we're in a sticky situation which includes a realistic possibility of relegation.
He won't do that, of course, because it puts the heat on him too much and it goes against the reason for sacking Manning.
Also, I don't think that's where the majority of the fanbase are at. Seems from reading on here that most believe that a turnaround is possible under a new manager, and doesn't rely entirely on Jan reinforcements.
