we could easily get him for nothing today. If Wiigan tried to ask for a fee we'd just say "OK we'll wait two weeks" and they will be left paying wages for two weeks for a player who is definitely leaving. If they let him go for nothing today they would save two weeks wages. It might be a case of us wanting to avoid paying two weeks wages but it has nothing whatsoever to do with a fee. Once your player gets within a couple of weeks of the end of his contract you are in no position to demand anything.
