To be honest, It’s just his nature.

Laughing at the situation doesn’t mean he thinks it’s funny. He described his friend’s tragic scooter accident and subsequent funeral that he has to attend as a ‘bit of a mishap’. He’s just the type to sugarcoat his disappointment and tip-toe around negative emotions. I can’t begrudge him his natural persona.
