In fact I feel I can safely say after reading that he will know way more about English football than you know about American sport (or apparently than you know about English football).
On top of that you state that the issue "without doubt is relegation". Well:
a) he will know all about relegation,as he was involved with the club when we were relegated from the Prem
b) in English football the big gap is between Prem money and the rest, so relegation from the Prem is a huge thing. But relegation from the other divisions much less so. In fact each of the last three Champ seasons has seen a side promoted (Luton, Ipswich, Sunderland) that were in League One very recently, suggesting that the gap between the two is fairly easily bridgable (especially for clubs that are big by L1 standards)
