I don’t place much trust in their judgment when it comes to “choosing the right person.” Their record speaks for itself… the nephew, the old mates, the ex-players parachuted into key roles. It’s less strategy, more familiarity.

That said, I’ve no doubt they tried to explain to Attanasio the oddities of English football… the tribalism, the locality, the fact that it’s not just a “sporting product.” But here’s the problem: explanation and understanding aren’t the same thing. In business, words are currency; in football, they’re just noise until tested by lived experience.

So yes, maybe they told him. But did he really absorb it? did he feel what it means to lose away at Rotherham in the rain, to have generations of families wound up in a club’s fate? I doubt it. Not because he’s stupid, but because you can’t learn that world from a briefing. You either live it, or you don’t.
